So today I went for my second Hooks and Needles meeting at the local library. Wasn't sure I'd enjoy it as much as I am, but I'm showing up when they start and finding that I'm staying till the end and wishing it was longer.
I spend the time crocheting, weaving in tails, looking over patterns, and doing a lot of listening and talking. The ladies there either knit or crochet or can do both. They are of varying ages and walks of life. But one thing we all have in common is our love for yarn and making beautiful things out of it.
I showed off my Michael Jackson piece today and the ladies were in awe. It's so reassuring when people tell you how talented you are, how amazing your work is, or even more so when they are speechless. I'm only 26 now, and yet I find that some of my work can rival an older person who's been doing it all their life. I really do love what I do.
I still have a lot to learn. I don't think I'll ever know it all. But I will always do my best to try to make the best items I can by repeatedly knotting the yarn. :)

Gangnam Style
Who would have thought such a weird song initially would turn out to be such an ear worm.
My shy 8 year old son who wouldn't dance in front of anyone or let anyone catch him has now turned into a little party animal.
After spending most of the day with him today at a knit/crochet club at our local library and then going to Walmart so he could buy his own knitting needles and yarn, we then returned home where he knit a little on a scarf he says he's making for our pup, Abbey. It's not perfect, but it's great for him. I'm proud of him. We listened to some Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Prince. We have since moved on to some more recent music. Including Flo Rida's "Whistle" and Psy's "Gangnam Style".
He's been a little dance worm :) Been kinda nice. It appears he likes something techno.
Now this is huge. He has a form of Autism called Aspberger's. He's shy, and a little awkward. But he is finding things he is interested in, which is real nice! Nice, as a mom, to see my son actually enjoying life some instead of seemingly being so miserable. I'm so excited for him. This is great!
So thank you Psy and Gangnam Style (the song) for opening a door for my son, that I wasn't sure I'd ever see open for him.

Crochet as therapy
January of 2011 was probably the worst month I had dealt with up to that point. December 17, 2010 I found out I was pregnant (after trying for about 7 years to get pregnant again). We were SOOOOO excited!!!! I scheduled my first appointment around 7 weeks and went in to be seen. They confirmed I was pregnant, still excited. They then did an ultrasound. I had a substitute doc since my midwife was out sick. The doc sounded dreary, and knowing what to look for on an ultrasound since I'd done it once before with my son, I knew something was wrong. My husband didn't notice anything off right away.
There was no heartbeat.
Utter sadness took over. The doc said maybe it was still too early, so we were told to come back in about a week. That was a long week. We went back, and had another ultrasound. Still nothing and no growth. This time I had my midwife and she had us go into a room and talk. We talked about options. We talked about the fact that I was going to have a miscarriage, it was just a matter of time. I opted to deal on my own. I didn't want a doc's intervention unless it was necessary. So we went home and waited for the "labor" to start.
This was probably one of the saddest moments of my life. I started a blanket, patchwork, to pass the time and try to avoid the heartache I was feeling. I worked little by little. On January 27, 2011, I had a miscarriage. I cried all day, felt lonely, felt like a failure, I felt like the world was ending. I was sooooooooo sad and in such a deep depression that it hurt.
I continued to work on the blanket. I lost almost a month working on it. I do not remember doing it. I do not remember starting it, or working through it, sewing it together, and finishing it. But somehow, not only did I make it through a hard time in my life, but I have something to show for it. Something that I can remember. When I miss the possibility of expanding our family at that time, I can snuggle with that blanket and think of my baby.
We named our baby Freeman Patricia (after my favorite uncle and my husband's favorite aunt). We didn't know a sex of the baby, so we went with a male/female name.
Looking back now, I'm glad I had crochet. I'm not sure how I would have made it through that time in my life. Crochet has been my life saver. I can't imagine it not being a part of my life.

Day 1
This is my first attempt to write any sort of blog, attempting to resemble something that is humorous and insightful.
I can start off by giving you a slight background of myself before continuing on to fill you in on the life of a crocheter.
As of Jan 5, 2013 I have been crocheting 18 years. I started when I was 8 years old mirroring my mother's motions (she crocheted left-handed and I am right-handed). I learned more intricate stitch-work from my next door neighbor. And have since learned everything else I know from intensive pattern reading, magazines, articles, Google, YouTube, and Facebook.
I occasionally find humor in my craft, but often find I can't remember it 5 minutes later. Insane, I know.
Let me clear up one thing. There IS a difference between knit and crochet. Know that if you refer to what either is doing as the opposite, it is viewed as something of an insult. Although the comment was not intentionally insulting, that was the end result. Most of us has spent MANY years perfecting our craft and are insulted that you cannot differentiate. This is not us deliberately being upset with you, just a minor grievance.
One of my many pet peeves? Working a pattern/project till it's about half-way done and then noticing there is either an error from myself or from the pattern writer. And that after countless hours on the project, I now have two options: 1) continue on, hoping no one will notice (but who am I kidding? I will forever know!!) or 2) RIP IT OUT and start over (after spending at least 15 minutes swearing profusely either internally or externally, crying for at least 5 minutes, and then swearing off doing anything for a while). Option 2 is generally what happens for me. It never gets easier.
Now tomorrow, my online classes open, again. This means that not only will I be attending college online, but I will be a momma, a wife, a student, a business owner (I say this lightly), and myself. Now it seems that being all of the above is easier than the last one, being myself. When I say being myself, I mean finding time for ME. Like a nice warm bubble bath and a good book, or going out with friends (of which really are limited, being a crocheter, time is not something I come by easily to afford with other people).
Speaking of time, do you know where I can purchase more? I have about 60 books I want to read badly. I also have about 10 orders for work I want to finish. I'll need to find time to do my school work. Oh, yeah, and there is laundry, cleaning, feeding pets, running errands, spending time with family.... I really need to find out where I can purchase more of this illusive, time.... Let me know. :)
